A transient ischaemic attack or TIA is also known as a mini-stroke. It is the same as a stroke, except that the symptoms last for a short amount of time and no longer than 24 hours. This is because the blockage that stops the blood getting to your brain is temporary. More than one in 12 people will have a stroke within a week of having a TIA. Because of this, a TIA is often called a warning stroke. So seek medical attention urgently.

Seven different screening policies were used, in three principal groups: serum screening offered to all mothers, maternal age with serum screening or nuchal translucency available to limited groups, and maternal age combined with anomaly scans. Current additional serum or nuchal translucency screening techniques for antenatal detection of Down’s syndrome are less advantageous than previously supposed.
More pregnant women were aged over 35 than has been presumed in statistical models used in demonstration projects of serum screening and, as a result, the proportion of affected fetuses in this age group is much greater than predicted. Serum screening for Down’s syndrome has been presumed to be more effective than screening by maternal age.
Serum screening and nuchal scanning did not achieve significantly higher antenatal detection rates of Down’s syndrome than the use of maternal age and routine anomaly scanning. Screening for Down’s syndrome has become an accepted part of routine antenatal care, but there is wide variation between different districts in the policy used. On the advice of the antenatal subgroup of the National Screening Committee in April the UK government announced that by all pregnant women should be offered serum screening in the second trimester to increase the antenatal detection of Down’s syndrome and to reduce the amniocentesis rate.

Scan4Safety is a pioneering programme led by the Department of Health that is improving patient safety, increasing clinical productivity and driving operational efficiency in the NHS. Scan4Safety is taking learnings from other sectors, such as retail, to improve traceability and efficiency through the use of international barcoding standards GS1 standards and common ways of doing business PEPPOL.
Barcodes have already transformed supply chain management across a number of sectors, hugely improving efficiencies and providing greater visibility and traceability of products right through the supply chain. With over five billion barcodes now scanned across the world every single day, barcodes are everywhere and these systems have developed to a point where we all simply take it for granted that they work.
However barcoding has had limited use in healthcare to date. There are pockets of great examples of barcoding being used effectively in some trusts, but until now this has not been consistently applied across the whole NHS.

From Monday, 23 March the decision was made to suspend the Southampton and Salisbury breast screening programme. Initially we will be contacting patients to rearrange appointments that we had to cancel. This will be followed by inviting ladies in the 50 to 70 year age range. We will be unable to accept self-referrals for those aged over 71 and women will not be invited as part of the AgeX trial until further notice.
These actions are aligned with national guidance provided by Public Health England. Please be assured that you will receive further information in due course. In the meantime, if you have any changes in your breast or symptoms that are causing you concern please contact your GP. The NHS breast screening programme provides free breast screening for all women in the UK aged 50 and over. Around one-and-a-half million women are screened in the UK each year.
All women aged 50 to 70 automatically receive an invitation to routine screening an x-ray examination every three years. Ordinarily this means that your first invitation for breast screening will fall between your 49th and 53rd birthday, at a time when your practice is being screened. However, from March the unit age extended the service to all women who fall within the new screening age groups of 47 to 49 and 71 to

Dental implants are strong, permanent and realistic replacements for missing teeth. Not surprisingly, they are becoming extremely popular with patients. The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts, which are gently inserted into the jawbone. Over time the jawbone bonds with the titanium, providing what is in effect a false tooth root. A crown or a prosthesis is placed on top of the implant. Implants can replace a single tooth or many teeth and can also be used to secure or stabilise dentures for greater comfort and increases self-confidence.
